Easy Fat Burning Exercises For Men - Buy Juice Detox Easy Fat Burning Exercises For Men Lemon Juice And Baking Soda For Drug Detox Diet Detox Foot Patch. Step aerobics is the kind of aerobic exercise that is unique in comparison to other forms of aerobics. This uniqueness primarily comes from your usage of the elevated. These exercises will build muscle, burn calories, and increase your metabolism to maximize fat burning. Just because you’re Paleo, you listen to my show, or you follow an iron-clad fat loss program doesn’t mean you’re immune to the absurd amount of bad exercise. The 1. 3 Best Exercises for Burning Fat. Related: RIPTENSITY—Fast Bodyweight Workouts From Men’s Health That Are So Intense, They Rip Away Body Fat! They work every muscle in your body. You’ll burn a lot of calories and your heart rate will go sky high. It’s certainly an amazing exercise to burn fat. But I personally believe there are 1. What do I mean by better? Well, the burpee is a really complex movement that combines a hip- hinge, plank, pushup, squat, and jump. If you’re not great at any one of those moves—whether it be due to a lack of strength, mobility, or motor control—then trust me when I say that your burpee will be even worse. There is a lot going on, more than is necessary to achieve the fat loss results you’re looking for. I have three main criteria when selecting exercises for metabolic conditioning workouts. The moves must. Here are 1. Goblet Squat. This is arguably the best way to squat, period. Front- loading the weight allows you to keep your trunk more upright. This takes stress off your spine and works your thighs more. The right combination of cardio training and strength-building exercises is the key to burning fat and turning it into muscle. Whittle your waist with this collection. Fat burning foods, boosts metabolism and weight loss due to their thermogenic effect! This list of what to eat will serve you well.Goblet squats are also safer to perform and more accessible than barbell squats, especially for higher- rep fat- loss training. All you need is a dumbbell (easier) or a kettlebell (harder). Just stand and sit tall and repeat. These are great for high reps and really tax your shoulders and core. One of my favorite ways to redline with this move is to do 1. Barbell Muscle Snatch or Dumbbell Muscle Snatch. Olympic lifts train total- body power and really hammer the highly metabolic muscles on the backside of your body. But they are very technical and hard to learn. This exercise, a modified version of the barbell snatch, is performed from a hang position with the bar at your knee or shin instead of on the floor. That decreases the range of motion and bypasses potential mobility problems. Plus, by combining a high pull to overhead press, there is no catch, which is where most of the form issues manifest themselves. Finally, all you need to do is fully extend your ankles, knees, and hips and come to a full stand at the top of the move. Other Olympic variations require you to jump your feet out and squat down to catch the weight. This creates serious stability and mobility demands that you want to avoid when you’re in a state of high fatigue. I like to do these with either a barbell or a pair of dumbbells. You may want to practice the move without load on the bar first to find your rhythm, then slowly load it up. Sets of 1. 0 to 2. Dumbbell Skier Swing or Alternating Kettlebell Swing. The swing has been shown to improve fitness and help you lose fat as much as running does, without all the joint stress that comes with pounding the pavement. Related: 1. 0 Exercises That Burn More Calories than Running Plus, it actually builds muscle, stimulates metabolism, and works the posterior chain. Most guys really need more meat on their back, hamstrings, and glutes—and the swing can deliver on that. If you’re using dumbbells, I recommend the skier swing. It requires your feet to be closer together so that the weights don’t hit your thighs. This, in turn, forces you to move more at the hips and less at the knees, which is what you want from a swing because it’s an explosive hip- hinge. If you’re using kettlebells, I love the alternating hand swing. Moving from hand to hand allows you to swing more continuously and for longer, which is great for fat loss. Plus, loading one side of your body at a time works your core more and unloads your spine. Many people who have back issues prefer this style of swinging because it allows for a slight degree of rotation that unloads your spine. My favorite swing workouts include. Dumbbell Farmer’s Walk. Walking is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy body weight for the long haul and it’s something you hope to be able to do until the day you die. It provides a continuous, low- impact calorie burn and it doesn’t require a lot of coaching. Now add some weight to that walk, and that bump in intensity will build muscle and burn fat everywhere. I like to alternate between two- and one- arm variations of the farmer’s walk. However, I prefer the one- arm option because you can work continuously by switching from hand to hand when you fatigue. Plus, it’s better for strengthening your spinal and hip stabilizers. I also like to mix in level changes, going from overhead to chest level to hip level, which is in order of difficulty from a stability standpoint. Sets of one to two minutes at a time are great for fat loss. I’ll even go for 1. Box Squat Jump. Plyometric exercises are great for stimulating your larger fast- twitch muscles fibers and torching fat, but the impact can take its toll over time, especially if you’re overweight. Enter box squat jumps. Sitting down between reps cleans up your landing mechanics and is much easier on your knees. You can also adjust the height of the box based on your mobility and fitness level. Stepup Jump. Much like the box squat jump, this exercise provides a lower- impact way to train your lower- body power and crush calories at a lightning speed. Related: Sign Up for the Daily Dose Newsletter and Get Fitness Advice Delivered to Your Inbox Every Day. Stepups are more hip- dominant than lunges, so they’re easier on your knees. Plus, the glutes are the biggest muscles in the human body—at least they should be! But excessive sitting leads to “saggy butt syndrome,” so the more we can kick those glutes into gear, the better. Battle Rope Wave. When I’m feeling stressed out and my energy levels are low, it can be really hard to get up for a workout. You feel me? But there’s one exercise mode I can always get up for, no matter what’s going on in my life. It doesn’t require a warmup and you can just blast some good music, set a timer, and rip it out real fast. Oh yeah—it’s super easy on your lower- body joints and you can recover from it instantly. Battle Rope Waves, baby! Try going all- out for 1. Alternate between different variations and just work as hard as you can while keeping your abs crunched and back flat. You’ll get an amazing heart and muscle pump. What more can you ask for? Related: RIPTENSITY: The New Training System From Men’s Health That Can Flatten Your Belly and Strengthen Your Body and Mind 8. Bear Crawl. You learned to crawl before you learned to walk or run, or at least you should have. Bear crawls have more benefits than just about any other move out there. They improve your rib and pelvic positioning and your breathing mechanics. They boost your shoulder stability and strengthen your hands, wrists, and core. And they tax both your thighs and upper body, making for a spirited fat- burning festival. I like to mix between walking lunges (see below) and bear crawls for the best of both worlds. In fact, bear crawls actually improve your lunging mechanics. Bear crawl for one minute, then lunge for two minutes. That’s one round. Perform up to 1. 0 total rounds for a 3. Walking Lunge. I consider walking lunges to be the strength and stability version of running. You can do it continuously because you’re moving from side to side for a maximum fat- loss stimulus. And the increased range of motion better stimulates your hips and thighs, which ramps up your metabolism in a serious way. If your goal is to burn fat, end each workout with 1. It will improve your hip mobility, bulletproof your knees, melt fat, and improve your cardio conditioning. It will also make you a better runner, squatter, and jumper. And the mental training is off the charts. Box Thruster. You probably know about thrusters (a term popularized by Cross. Fit), a combination exercise involving a squat to overhead press. This move is often used for Met. Con workouts, and rightfully so, because it works your whole body and really spikes your heart rate. But many people lack the mobility and technique to do these correctly, and when you add high reps and short rest periods on top of that, they can get downright ugly and dangerous. You can fix this by sitting on a box or bench. This helps clean up your squat pattern without sacrificing the calorie burn. Or do 1. 0 reps EMOM for 1. RELATED: Why You Should Start Doing EMOM Workouts ASAP1. TRX Row Machine. Many people swear by the rowing machine for fat loss. How can you argue with them? It uses both your upper and lower body for one powerful body- changing movement and is very low impact. But not everyone has access to the machine, and many people do not have the hip or ankle mobility to row right. That’s why I love the TRX row “machine.” Holding the straps allows you to squat better and deeper for longer. Plus, the rowing component is a lot easier to perform than it is on the traditional cardio machine, especially for taller and bigger people. You can add a jump at the top to make your fat cells cry for mercy. Try going nonstop for 1 to 2 minutes at a time, then resting for the same amount of time that you worked. If five to 1. 0 rounds of that doesn’t change you, nothing will. Blast- Off Pushup. This is the ultimate total- body pushup. It’s kind of like adding a leg press to your pushup, and it will put your metabolism on high alert. RELATED: 2. 4 Pushups You Need to Try. It also challenges your upper- body and core muscles more because you have to decelerate your body after your legs and hips propel you forward. Plus, it mobilizes your hips. Plug this into a whole- body circuit as a core or upper- body push move. Or pair it with any of the previously mentioned lower- body moves: Do blast- off pushups for 2. Then repeat. It will kick your sweet little ass. Skater Jump. Skater jumps move your body from side to side rather than front to back. This strengthens the muscles on the sides of your hips, improves your athleticism, and is less stressful on your knees than the forward- back movements. You can also quickly scale the movement down by touching the floor with your back foot to provide more support and stability. If you’re looking for a great body- weight cardio burner, do this triset with no rest between moves.

Diet? Your Guide & FAQMy first round of the Whole 3. I’ll be the first to tell you – I really wasn’t too sure on giving up an occasional glass of wine or piece of pizza. I typically eat healthy, and I have had a history at labeling foods good and bad. So I was hesitant to try a diet that removed grains, dairy, sugar and beans. After a few friends swore by it, I decided to pick up the book. Get All the Details in the Whole 3. I think I found it at the perfect time for me too. I was feeling sluggish. My digestion was all over the place. I had also gained about 5lbs since starting a new teaching job, and I rarely ate enough vegetables. Plus, my family history is full of auto- immune issues and inflammation problems. The Whole 3. 0 diet focuses on removing foods that causes inflammation and helps identify food allergies. Just a few benefits association from the Whole 3. Diet are: Reduce inflammation. Clearer skin. Better energy. Improved sleep patterns. Less cravings. So after finishing reading the book, I decided to try the plan for a month with my mom and husband. What Is Whole. 30? In a nutshell, the Whole 3. At a glance, it’s low- carb and high protein. You’ll notice the foods included on the plan are fresh and high- quality. I ate a lot of fresh, organic vegetables, grass- fed chicken and beef, and healthy fats like avocado and nuts. As you start eating more of those foods, you do have to eliminate several other foods. On the Whole 3. 0 diet, you aren’t allowed any grains, dairy, soy, legumes, sugars, artificial sweeteners, added sugars, or alcohol. There are no cheat days or meals. If you cheat – you have to start all the way over. Harsh, but true. Why Do I Have to Give Up Certain Foods? The Whole 3. 0 diet is designed to help you find out what foods leave you feeling less than stellar. The only way to truly know that is to eliminate the most common suspects. The foods eliminated have been commonly connected to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, digestion problems, and more. After the 3. 0 days, you’ll be able to add in 1 food at time to see how it does with your system – so just because cheese isn’t on the menu this month doesn’t mean you’ll never eat it again. This isn’t a weight- loss diet. Many people will lose weight on the program, but it isn’t designed to be a “weight- loss diet”. A couple reasons people lose weight on the Whole 3. They’re eating less calories than they were eating before starting the Whole 3. Their bodies’ are performing better – giving them energy to be more active and hormones are balancing out. The Whole 30 Diet ditches old habits of fast food, grains, and dairy. On the flip side, you get bacon daily, and I bet you're going to feel better too! On the program you get 3 meals per day with no snacks. I enjoyed having a set breakfast, lunch and dinner though, and I never felt hungry. It was also a relief to not have to count calories, measure out my food or weigh myself for the full 3. This is just a summary of the Whole 3. Diet from my personal knowledge and experience. I highly recommend the Whole 3. It Starts with Food before you start your own 3. Going Paleo Versus Following the Whole 3. The Whole 3. 0 is a paleo- approved diet, but it’s more restrictive and meant only for a short time. On the other hand, someone could choose to eat Paleo for a lifetime. Also, Whole 3. 0 diet doesn’t allow for sugars like honey or goodies created with almond or coconut flour whereas a Paleo diet does. Why I Decided to Try Whole. As I mentioned before, my family history, energy levels and current eating habits were all reasons I decided to do the Whole 3. My husband had some weight to lose too, and while it wasn’t a “diet” I thought cleaning up his fast- food habits might help him lose a few pounds. The Whole Foods Diet: The Lifesaving Plan for Health and Longevity . He lost 4. 0lbs in that month!). I also loved that it was just 3. By the end of the month, I knew I would be able to see and feel a difference. If I didn’t have any results, it was just a month of different food – no harm in my mind. On top of the physical things I hoped it could help with – I knew it would make me address my emotional relationship with food as well. This quote from the creator of the program really struck me.“You’re not eating things . You’re not white- knuckling your way through the day resisting every candy dish — you feel in control,” Melissa says. You make a deliberate decision and move on.”So I jumped on board. Preparing to Start the Whole 3. Diet. This is not something you decide to commit to at 1. Sunday night after overindulging over the weekend. Getting prepared physically and mentally for the Whole 3. The program does provide a book, grocery list, a blog, an online group message board, and even tips on preparing for traveling and going out to eat. But you have to look over all of it and really understand it. It’s a true commitment for that month. On the physical side, you’ll be amazed when you grocery shop. There are so many products with added sugars and processed ingredients you’ll need to avoid. For example, it took a lot of effort for me to find bacon without added sugar. Who knew bacon had sugar?! What about mustard?! So nuts! On top of the food groups being removed, I had to check labels for carrageenan, MSG and sulfites. Carrageenan is often in almond milk, and sulfites are in a lot of lunch meats. You also have to be aware of how things are prepared and served if you go out to a restaurant. Getting a steak and green beans still may contain added sugars or processed ingredients. For me – the mental part of it was the hardest. Remembering it was only 3. I had to know that constantly being focused on my food at each meal could change how I felt every day of the rest of my life, and that these habits would become easier – even second nature – with time. My mind wrapped around it pretty well by looking over the resources mentioned above, having 2 people doing it with me and also reminding myself it was just 3. The hardest part was learning to accept the unexpected treats I couldn’t have. My favorite cookies my dad brought home as a surprise, the Coke Zero my secret pal at work left me and a birthday party were seriously challenging for me. I didn’t want my food rules to come between me and people – but if I indulged once I had to start all the way over. At first glance, I was like it’s just 3 meals per day. No big deal! But when you’re preparing each meal – it can take time! I ate a lot of eggs with bacon and fruit for breakfast. Dinner was either simple like a lean meat and veggies with ghee or a pot of something like chili. Lunch was my downfall for creativity and time. My best tip is to make enough dinner that you can have it the next day for lunch. Some people really enjoy making a ton of recipes, but I liked using recipes from 1 or 2 books and repeating them. The Well- Fed 2 Chocolate Chili is so good, and I loved the Against All Grain book as well. Though neither book is not completely Whole 3. There is also a Whole 3. Cookbook now, but I haven’t tried it. Week 1 was definitely the hardest, but I never felt hungry or weak. I just felt tired and a little grumpy without my Coke Zero. By Week 2, I noticed fruit was tasting sweeter, and my tastebuds towards healthy fats like avocado and coconut oil were changing. I loved having my healthy fat at each meal. I also wasn’t one of those lucky people that just “never crave sugar anymore”. But I did live through the 3. No one cared that I skipped the cookies or Coke Zero, and I was proud I finished it. Would I Do It Again? I think so! I know it sounds stupid excuse, but it’s hard to find a full 3. It’s not that I couldn’t adjust for those events, but why would I when I know what foods irritate my system? I have made it to a point where I know what works for me (moderately low- carb, high protein with a few complex carbs mixed in). Since it’s not a diet- program, I don’t see a reason to return to it immediately. Now if I start noticing a food sensitivity symptom, I will be right back on it though. I know it works! The Whole 3. Reintroduction Phase. For me, day 3. 1 was the hardest for me. I didn’t physically crave that large pizza that mom, Jake and I dug into – but I mentally felt like I deserved it. After doing so well for 3. I can’t tell you how weird the first Coke Zero tasted after the Whole 3. I wish I had never let myself have another one – now I’m back to having them occasionally. Ugh! The proper mentality would be to reintroduce one ingredient at a time back into your diet to see what is causing you to not feel great. I still think this is possible even if you indulge like I did because I could feel the difference, but it definitely makes sense to call it something like the Whole 5. Whole 6. 0 as you start reintroducing foods one at a time versus throwing your body into a shock like I did. Just plan ahead for it. Also, while it is a short- lived program, it’s important to find what you liked about it and stick to similar habits. If you go back to old habits – you’ll have the same problems you started with before you did all that hard work! Tips for a Successful Whole. Read the book, It Starts with Food. Pick a start date and tell people. There are all kinds of fancy recipes out there. Some of these aren’t allowed on the Whole 3. If in doubt, plan for mostly easy meals and mix in 1 meal per week that takes a little extra work. You don’t have to be having mashed cauliflower and zoodles every day. Find things you do love to eat. By looking at the Whole 3. I felt less deprived. Aim to make it fun! Hide your scale from yourself. Plan Plan PLAN. You should have a plan for each meal, but that sometimes isn’t enough. A surprise errand, a long meeting or a relative in town can throw you off. I always kept a lunchbox of snacks and made sure to know what was allowed at a restaurant too. Have the mindset if you cheat you start all over. Working Out with the Whole. You can totally workout with the Whole 3. I chose to do a strength workout that I had done before. That way I could compare my results when eating more protein and fat compared to my normal diet that includes dairy and grains plus some chocolate most days. Mercola's Nutrition Plan will give you tips on healthy eating and exercise, as well as other lifestyle strategies to help you achieve optimal health. I started the Ohsawa diet in order to cleanse and purify my body. I needed it badly. I was super cranky all the time, over- stressed and everything annoyed me. So, I thought a good detox will cure all that. I heard about the Ohsawa diet and decided to give it a try. Of course, I was a bit skeptical at first as I never considered cereals to be that good for your health and I was actually afraid I’ll gain weight by eating all those carbs. Well, I was wrong. I had 5. 7kg when I started this and now I have 5. For a long time I wanted to achieve this weight goal but as I told you before, diets aren’t really my thing. I didn’t even put an effort to it. I heard that the Ohsawa diet is great because it also helps you achieve the ideal weight. For example, if you are overweight you can actually lose up to 1kg each day until you have a normal weight, If you have a normal weight you will maintain it and if you are underweight you’ll actually gain weight. The wonderful thing is that you don’t have to starve yourself. You can eat as much as you need. You’ll feel full after small portions anyway. The 1. 0- days Ohsawa diet is hard to keep at first. You have to eat only cereals, like brown rice, whole wheat, millet, and buckwheat, for 1. You’ll crave other stuff too. Treatment of Diabetes: The Diabetic Diet There are several aspects in the treatment of diabetes, each one with a very important role. Even if you feel you already eat a basically healthy diet, the majority of you will highly benefit from starting at Level 1— as there are basic requirements in this. For example, I craved fruits and veggies the first days but managed to keep the diet until the end. The cravings will disappear after the 3rd day or so. I decided to begin a macrobiotic diet, actually more like a macrobiotic lifestyle. I think it’s a wonderful diet and I really believe in its principles. I also found so many great macrobiotic recipes and I was amazed by how delicious they look. I can’t wait to give them a try. Now that I’ve shared with you my Ohsawa experience (which I strongly recommend!!) I will also tell you everything you need to know about how to begin a macrobiotic lifestyle. About the Macrobiotic Diet. The macrobiotic diet first appeared around the end of the last century, when a Japanese army doctor (Sagen Ishizuka) established a theory of nutrition and medicine based on the traditional Oriental diet. He suffered from multiple illnesses and studied both Western and Eastern medicine. He then compiled the information and his conclusions in two books Chemical Theory of Longevity and Diet For Health. Ishizuka criticized the adoption of the Western modern medicine and nutrition principles, and strongly recommended the Japanese traditional diet – whole, unrefined foods, with almost no animal foods. Suffering multiple “incurable” diseases from a young age, George Ohsawa learned about the macrobiotic diet from two of Mr. Ishizuka’s disciples and managed to completely restore his health. He then wrote more than 3. Macrobiotic Diet Basics. The word macrobiotic comes from “macro” which means big and “bios” which means “life”. So, macrobiotics can be also called the art of a great life. Macrobiotics is not actually a diet and it’s more a way of life. It includes also the spiritual part of living and it teaches us to see the bigger picture, to consider the ups and downs in life as gifts given to us in order to become better beings. One of the important nutrition principles in the macrobiotic diet involves consuming foods that are rich in nutrients and have balanced yin/yang properties. The macrobiotic diet contains foods like whole grains, beans and bean products (like tofu), organic vegetables (local and in season), soups, sea vegetables, desserts (sweetened with rice syrup, barley malt, fruit and sometimes maple syrup), a little fish, a little fruit, pickles, condiments, nuts, seeds and non- aromatic teas. However, having a macrobiotic lifestyle doesn’t mean you’ll never eat chocolate again or never have a margarita! The important thing is to always remember that moderation is key. The Macrobiotic Meal . Grains are the basis of a macrobiotic meal. Grains should make up 5. Brown and wild rice, barley, millet, whole wheat etc. Veggies are the next most important part of your macro meal. Cooked and raw veggies should make up at least 3. Leafy greens are strongly recommended (except spinach which is very yang and should be occasionally consumed). Local and in season veggies are also preferred. When eating you’ll have to keep in mind the yin/yang properties of certain vegetables. This is not hard to learn. Beans, especially fermented bean products like tempeh and miso are important to your meal. Beans should be about 1. Tempeh, whole beans or legumes like lentils, chickpeas and more should be on your plate. Tofu is also a good choice as it contains natural probiotics and aids digestion. This may be a shock to you but actually, fruits should rarely be eaten in a macro diet. They’re perfect as snacks or desserts but should not be eaten more than 3 times a week. Tropical foods, like bananas or pineapple, should be avoided. Sea Vegetables (Seaweeds). Another important part of your macro meal would be are sea veggies. Dulse, kelp, kombu, arame and more are healthy choices for your meal. Sea veggies are rich in vitamins and minerals and excellent for health. Soups are a very important part of a well- balanced macro diet and should be eaten daily. Soups that contain grains, veggies, sea veggies and beans are an ideal macro meal in a bowl. Miso soups are pretty popular. Fermented Foods. Tempeh is ideal but you can also try pickled veggies which bring lots of good probiotics in your diet. Condiments/Oils. Oils like sesame oil and corn oil are the best (be careful, corn oil mustn’t be GMO) Miso paste, sea salt, brown rice vinegar, tamari, tahini, brown rice syrup, veggie broth, dried mushrooms etc. The macrobiotic diet allows you to eat white meat fish 1- 3 times a week. Of course, if you are vegan or vegetarian you can just skip it, it will not affect the diet in any way. Whole Foods. The less processed foods are, the better. This is one of the most important principles in the macro diet. Image from the book of Michio Kushi. For a better understanding of the macrobiotic diet, here are the three categories of macro foods, from most frequent to less frequent. Main foods: whole grains, veggies, beans. Secondary foods: fruits, beverages (teas, veggie juices), oils, nuts, seeds, fish. Pleasure foods: Eat whatever you want, with moderation. Best to avoid foods in the macro diet. Any food containing white, brown, or any other refined sugar. Artificial sweeteners. Fruit juice. Milk, cheese, cream, butter, ghee, yogurt, and ice cream. Refined oils. Caffeine. Alcohol. Heavy use of spices. White rice and white flour. Foods containing chemicals, preservatives, dyes, and insecticides Here is a list of Yin and Yang foods. As stated above, it is best to consume foods that have a balanced Yin/Yang energy. Extreme and very Yin and Yang foods should be avoided. Yin and Yang Food Chart. Yin and Yang in the Macro Diet. Source: Pinterest. If you know who created this, please contact me so I can credit him/her. Yin and Yang are at the base of the macrobiotic diet. As Wiki says, in Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin- yang is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many natural dualities (such as female and male, dark and light, low and high, cold and hot, water and fire, life and death and so on) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin- yang concept. In the macrobiotic diet, it is believed that if we eat foods that are whole, local and in season, our bodies will get the ideal yin and yang needed. It is also encouraged not to eat foods that are either too yin or too yang as it may disturb our inner balance. The perfect foods to consume are the ones which have a good yin/yang balance. Yin attracts disease; a body with too much yin energy is an ill body. Yang on the other way cures disease but is interrelated with the yin energy of the body. A balanced body is a healthy one. Do you believe that black men don't want their women to lose weight? Black women and weight. D., and Marilyn Gaston, M. D., founders of the Gaston & Porter Health Improvement Center in Potomac, Maryland, have based their practice on the benefits of social support. In their Prime Time Sister Circles, Black women in communities around the country meet two hours a week to focus on improving their fitness, nutrition and stress management. One of the complaints Gaston and Porter say they hear most often is that women are too fatigued to exercise. That's no surprise, given all we have on our plates. Black women are often the primary breadwinners in their families as well as caretakers of children, grandchildren and elderly relatives. All this responsibility can lead to unhealthy patterns, says Bailey. We sometimes cope through emotional eating—often dining after everyone else, so we're eating in isolation or late at night because we're trying to get everything done. Sometimes we don't eat at all, and we know that skipping meals leads to accelerated rates of weight gain.? Porter and Gaston pose the following question to women: If you knew that walking 3. So when women say they want to give a gift to their loved ones, we say focus on your health. Sure, a double cappuccino will help you get through the morning, but that lack of rest is leaving you more than bleary- eyed. Several recent studies have shown that getting fewer than six hours of sleep a night puts you at greater risk for obesity. Among Black professionals, only 5. A 2. 01. 3 study from UC Berkeley found that lack of sleep causes an increase in appetite and cravings for sugary and high- fat food. Your cortisol is higher, which makes you more insulin- resistant, meaning you're better at storing fat, worse at burning it off. On top of that you're craving junk. Give yourself a strict bedtime, one that's seven and a half hours before you need to wake up, and then stick to a routine. One hour before bedtime, turn off all electronics; half an hour before, engage in some relaxing activity, such as reading or taking a bath. Ten minutes before bed, practice deep breathing. THRIFTY GENE HYPOTHESISWhile some women gain weight in response to the stress of a doing- it- all life, others note all the females in their family who appear to be battling the same slow metabolism and chalk it up to genetic predisposition. They may be right. Christianson explains that one theory, the thrifty gene hypothesis, holds that certain genes, which may be more prevalent in African- Americans, . That's what leads to heart disease. While that won't always necessarily make us achieve a normal BMI according to the scale, it can help us decrease our risks for weight- related health problems and increase life span. Lofton suggests starting the healthy habit of identifying 2. For instance, replace one soda a day with water. Then get moving. I encourage people to find something that is already part of their lives and just do it more vigorously. For instance, if you're at your kid's soccer game, walk briskly around the track. But according to Gary Taubes, founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative, a not- for- profit think tank dedicated to obesity research, if you really want to lighten your load, focus less on counting calories and more on reducing the real culprit: sugar and refined carbohydrates. In his book, Good Calories, Bad Calories (Anchor), Taubes states that a diet high in sugar and carbs is inherently more fattening than a diet of the same number of calories without the carbs. Taubes maintains that African- Americans are especially sensitive to the effects of sugar and carbohydrates because these foods have been in our diets for less time than for people of European descent. African- Americans, who were forcibly imported to the U. S. 3. 00 to 4. 00 years ago, for the most part hadn't had sugar in their diets before. Try eliminating sugar, refined carbs and processed foods, and eat as much as you want of everything else. Taubes maintains you won't feel hungry and you'll lose weight. AN IMPERFECT PASTA growing body of research suggests that sometimes the biggest obstacle to a healthy future is a troubled past. Nadine Burke Harris, M. D., CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco and an expert on the effects of childhood trauma, says, . The weight gain is caused by multiple factors connected to the release of cortisol in response to chronic stress. Trauma also impacts the pleasure center of the brain, adds Harris. Changes in the brain cause folks with a history of trauma to feel pleasurable experiences less intensely, so they need more stimuli to get the same amount of enjoyment as someone else. That's partly why people who've undergone trauma have higher rates of smoking, alcohol and substance abuse and food addiction. But research shows therapy is crucial. I also recommend daily exercise. But if you want to use exercise as a means of dropping weight, you've got to be strategic about it. That means engaging in high- intensity interval training, which fitness experts say impacts your metabolism most efficiently. While vitamins alone can't help you lose all those unwanted pounds, not getting enough of certain ones may make the weight loss a little harder. But weight loss is more about calories than vitamins. When following a reduced- calorie diet, you need to eat foods that also give your body all the vitamins necessary for good health. If you think you might be deficient in nutrients and it's affecting your weight, consult your doctor to discuss the need for additional supplements. Most Americans don't meet the recommended intake for vitamin A, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. This fat- soluble vitamin plays an important role in the regulation of thyroid hormones, and not getting enough vitamin A in your diet is associated with reduced levels, according to a 2. Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Thyroid hormones regulate how your body's cells use energy, which affects the rate of your metabolism. When thyroid hormone levels are too low, parts of your body slow down, and this may cause a decrease in your metabolism. Add vitamin- A- rich foods to your daily diet to make sure you get at least 7. International Journal of Obesity. A study from 2. 00. The Endocrine Society's 9. D improved weight loss, and the researchers suggested that taking extra vitamin D may help those following a weight- loss diet lose more weight. Because this study only established an association between vitamin D levels and weight loss, studies are still needed to establish a clear link between taking extra vitamin and losing weight. However, a 2. 01. Nutrition Journal found that obese participants taking calcium plus vitamin D lost more body fat on a reduced- calorie diet than those not taking any supplement. To improve your vitamin D levels, be sure to add a variety of vitamin- D- rich foods to your diet. These include salmon, eggs, tuna and vitamin- D- fortified milk. People who carry more weight also tend to have lower levels of vitamin C, according to a 2. Or "Top Ten Diet Myths Debunked". That would have fit almost as well. C a day. Oranges, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, peppers and strawberries are all good sources of the water- soluble vitamin, and they make a healthy addition to your weight- loss diet. B vitamins make up a group of eight water- soluble vitamins that play an important role in metabolizing food into energy. Because they're necessary components of your metabolism, you may think getting more of the B vitamins in your diet will rev up your metabolism and help you lose weight. That's not the case, however. Because they're water- soluble, your body is unable to store B vitamins, and any excess you take beyond what you need is eliminated in your urine. Making sure you meet your B- vitamin needs, however, may help control appetite, and keep energy levels up. They're found in a variety of foods, including grains, veggies, meats and beans. Home Remedies, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, Diet. The disease results from prolonged irritation and inflammation of the delicate membrane which lines the walls of the colon. Chronic ulcerative colitis is a severe prolonged inflammation of the colon or large bowel, in which ulcers form on the walls of the colon. Symptoms for Colitis. The symptoms of colitis will vary depending on the type of colitis, but the symptoms typically involve abdominal pain and diarrhea of varying severity. This results in the cramp like abdominal pain, the main symptom of colitis. This pain may be persistent or sporadic, and is usually felt in the lower abdomen. In most cases of colitis the pain develops in waves, peaking with the onset of diarrhea, after which it begins to wane. Diarrhea is another common symptom of colitis, and is also caused by the failure of the colonic muscles to function normally. The spasmodic contractions of the colon cause the contents of the colon to travel a lot more rapidly through, with less time for absorption of fluid. This results in diarrhea. The presence of blood in the feces may also be observed. This is because bleeding hemorrhoids can develop as a result of frequent and severe diarrhea. The presence of blood is not normal however, and you should bring it to the attention of your health care provider. You may experience a constant sensation of needing to have a bowel movement and this is referred to as Tenesmus. Depending on the cause for colitis, you may also experience signs of infection like chills or fever. Causes of Colitis. It is extremely important to identify the cause of colitis, as treatment requirements will vary for different types of colitis. The most common types of colitis and their causes are as follows: Infectious Colitis. Colitis can be caused by infections that may be brought on by a virus, bacteria or parasite. Most cases of infectious colitis are caused by food borne illnesses with bacteria like salmonella and e coli being responsible. Infectious colitis in such cases may result in symptoms like bloody diarrhea and it can cause severe dehydration. A parasitic infection with the giardia parasite can be picked up from ingested water, not necessarily swallowed, but also when swimming. This can also cause severe diarrhea. Pseudomembranous colitis is another type of colitis caused by infection, with the bacteria Clostridium difficile, but it is differentiated from other types of infectious colitis because of the manner in which it is brought on. This disorder is typically caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria, resulting from antibiotic medication. Ischemic Colitis. Ischemic colitis is caused due to some other underlying health condition, and for treatment to be effective, the underlying cause needs to be addressed. Ischemic colitis describes a condition of colitis caused by reduced blood flow to the colon. This could occur because of a narrowing of the arteries due to atherosclerosis. The decrease in blood flow to the colon may also occur due to mechanical causes such as incarcerated hernia or volvulus. If there is a risk of low blood flow to the colon, ischemic colitis can develop if there is a drop in blood pressure. In such a scenario, you would probably experience other symptoms as well like anemia, dehydration and shock. Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn. Ulcerative colitis is a rather severe condition and there is no permanent cure for the condition. It is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, in which the colon is attacked by the immune system. The condition generally originates in the rectum, from where it spreads through the colon. Microscopic Colitis. Microscopic colitis includes two diseases; collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. In both conditions the colon suffers inflammation when the walls of the colon are engorged with collagen or lymphocytes respectively. Cause of Microscopic Colitis. The cause of these conditions is unknown. Possible causes include unidentified chronic gastrointestinal infections, immune disturbance. Maintaining a proper diet is essential to living with Crohn's and Colitis. Learn more about IBD diet options from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. This is quite a rare type of colitis and is usually only seen in older women. The cause of microscopic colitis is not really understood, but it may be an autoimmune disorder. Chemical Colitis. Chemical colitis is, as the name suggests, caused from exposure to chemicals. This can occur when an enema is administered and there are harsh chemicals that are released into the colon. Remedies for Colitis. Home remedies for ulcerative colitis are particularly popular because of the very nature of the condition. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition and there may be no natural cure for colitis, but natural remedies for ulcerative colitis can help to control the condition to some extent. Most natural treatments for colitis help to minimize the severity of symptoms by reducing the colon inflammation. The effectiveness of home remedies can vary greatly however, and the result will also differ from individual to individual. Here are some home remedies that are believed to help with colitis. According to some individuals, aloe vera gel capsules can exercise an anti- inflammatory effect, and according to some studies although the benefits are uncertain there is little risk of side effects. A popular herbal remedy for colitis involves the use of Boswellia, as the resin present in the tree bark is thought to act as a blocker for chemical reactions that contribute to inflammation. This herb is popular as a remedy for various inflammatory conditions like arthritis and gout as well. This may be a good alternative for individuals who suffer gut irritation as a side effect from anti- inflammatory medications. What is Microscopic Colitis? Microscopic colitis is a chronic condition that involves the digestive system, particularly the large intestine or colon. Microscopic colitis is a type of inflammation of the colon, or large intestine, that can cause watery diarrhea and cramping. It can be painful and unpleasant. The herb can be taken in the supplement form, but you should consult with your doctor for the appropriate dosage. The pineapple stem, as unassuming as it may be, contains bromelain, which is a mixture of protein digesting enzymes. Some studies suggest that this property may help to reduce and control inflammation. Colitis treatment with diet modifications will not help to cure colitis, but the foods you consume do have an effect on the frequency and severity of the symptoms. Certain foods may aggravate a flare up of symptoms, while others can help to soothe the symptoms. Some foods that can aggravate symptoms like bloating and gas are broccoli, cabbage, beans, and caffeinated and carbonated drinks. While fiber intake can help with colitis symptoms, in some cases fiber supplements or high fiber foods can actually worsen the symptoms, so it would be best to consult with your doctor and a dietician before making any changes to your diet. The dosage needs to be decided by your doctor. Make it a point to eat smaller and more frequent meals, as no matter how healthy your diet is, the digestive process is severely impaired and it would be best to avoid subjecting it to unnecessary stress. Suggestion for Colitis. Stress is not regarded as a cause for colitis anymore, but it can aggravate the symptoms and impair your body. Light exercise and meditative or relaxation techniques can greatly help relieve stress and help improve your condition. References Muhammed Sherid, Eli D. Diet myths abound in the health industry, but one of the biggest myths of all is the idea that a calorie is a calorie, no matter where you get it from, or what the chemical or nutritional makeup of it is. Now, a new video, the . Your body actually treats sugar in the same way it treats alcohol and other toxins. This is in large part how sugars can damage your liver and other organs, and why Dr. Lustig refers to sugar as a toxin. I recently wrote about this at length in the article, Is Sugar Toxic? Obesity Goes Beyond Aesthetics While many still shrug at the notion of obesity being anything but an aesthetic issue, this simply isn't a truthful evaluation of the situation. The obesity epidemic threatens not only the health and longevity of a clear majority of people, it also adds a tremendous burden to our health care system. Lustig explains in part 1 above, the eight primary diseases related to metabolic dysfunction account for a staggering 7. US. These diseases include: Type 2 diabetes Non- alcoholic fatty liver disease (now affects 1/3 of all Americans)Hypertension. Polysystic ovarian syndrome (affects 1. American women)Lipid problems. Cancer. Heart disease. Dementia The four diseases listed on the top row are conventionally associated with metabolic syndrome. However, as stated by Dr. Lustig, several other diseases fall within this scope as well—which are listed in the bottom row. He also explains that while obesity is associated with metabolic syndrome and all of these diseases, obesity is not the CAUSE of them; it is simply a marker. Rather, the underlying cause is metabolic dysfunction, and excessive sugar/fructose consumption is a primary driver of that. According to Dr. Lustig, 2. Ditto for 6. 0 percent of normal- weight people. However, the MAJORITY of obese people—about 8. All in all, metabolic dysfunction affects a clear majority of Americans. But why? Another dogmatic belief that simply isn't true is the idea that obesity is the end result of eating too much and exercising too little; i. This has led to the view that obese people are simply . Lustig points out, there are societal forces at work that go beyond personal responsibility. An increasing number of infants are now obese, and . These societal forces include: Lack of time to prepare and consume proper foods. Alterations in mass food production. Since the 1. 96. 0's, when saturated fat was incorrectly demonized as the cause of heart disease, processed foods have reduced fat content while simultaneously increasing sugar content (in order to be palatable)Reduced sleep. As mentioned in the featured video above, the societal changes over the past 6. Among the dramatic changes to our food supply is the extensive use of sugar, primarily in the form of high fructose corn syrup, which is added to virtually all processed foods. And this is where the fallacy of . One Calorie Can Be Vastly Different from Another.. According to Dr. Robert Lustig, fructose is . This is largely because different nutrients provoke different hormonal responses, and those hormonal responses determine, among other things, how much fat you accumulate. The average American consumes 1/3 of a pound of sugar a day. That's five ounces or 1. And many Americans consume more than twice that amount! Thanks to the excellent work of researchers like Dr. Robert Lustig, as well as Dr. Richard Johnson, we now know that fructose: Is metabolized differently from glucose, with the majority being turned directly into fat. Tricks your body into gaining weight by fooling your metabolism, as it turns off your body's appetite- control system. Fructose does not appropriately stimulate insulin, which in turn does not suppress ghrelin (the . Rapidly leads to weight gain and abdominal obesity (. Over time leads to insulin resistance, which is not only an underlying factor of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, but also many cancers. This is why the idea that you can lose weight by counting calories simply doesn't work. After fructose, other sugars and grains are likely the most excessively consumed food that promotes weight gain and chronic disease. This also includes food items that are typically viewed as healthy, such as fruit juice or even large amounts of high fructose fruits. What needs to be understood is that when consumed in large amounts, these items will also adversely affect your insulin, which is a crucially potent fat regulator. So yes, drinking large amounts of fruit juice on a daily basis can contribute to weight gain.. In short, you do not get fat because you eat too many calories and don't exercise enough. You get fat because you eat the wrong kind of calories. As long as you keep eating fructose and grains, you're programming your body to create and store fat. Replacing Sugars with Healthy Fats is Key for Reversing Metabolic Syndrome I believe there are two primary dietary recommendations that, if widely implemented, could help reverse our current disease trend in short order: Severely restricting carbohydrates (sugars, fructose, and grains), and Increasing healthy fat consumption While health authorities insist that sugar is fine . An ingredient that is found in virtually all processed foods cannot be considered . However, this is simply untrue. The only really dangerous fat out there is trans fat (margarine, vegetable oils). Saturated fats are actually vital for optimal health as they are: Building blocks for your cell membranes Useful antiviral agents (caprylic acid)Effective as an anticaries, antiplaque and anti fungal agents (lauric acid)Modulators of genetic regulation and prevent cancer (butyric acid)Needed for production of a variety of hormones and hormone like substances. Carriers for important fat- soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and required for the conversion of carotene to vitamin A, for mineral absorption, and for a host of other biological processes. Useful to actually lower cholesterol levels (palmitic and stearic acids)Provide a concentrated source of energy. When cutting down on carbs, you generally need to increase your intake of healthy (ideally organic, unprocessed and minimally heated) saturated fats. Both carbs and fats are sources of energy, but saturated fat is actually the preferred fuel for your heart. Another metabolic bonus is that fat does not raise your insulin levels, whereas carbs do. However, it's important to recognize the difference between grain carbs and vegetable carbs. If you want to lower your insulin levels and reduce fat accumulation, reduce the amount of grains and sugars you eat; NOT your vegetables. In fact, you actually need to radically increase the amount of vegetables you eat when you cut grains, as by volume grains are far denser than vegetables. As for healthy fats, good sources include: Olives and Olive oil. Coconuts and coconut oil. Butter made from raw grass- fed organic milk Raw Nuts, such as, almonds or pecans. Organic pastured egg yolks Avocados Grass- fed meats Palm oil Unheated organic nut oils Keep in mind that olive oil should not be used for cooking. Instead, use coconut oil for cooking, frying and baking, and save the olive oil for salad dressing. Another healthful fat you want to be mindful of is animal- based omega- 3. Deficiency in this essential fat can cause or contribute to very serious health problems, both mental and physical, and may be a significant underlying factor of up to 9. For more information about omega- 3's and the best sources of this fat, please review my previous article: Are You Getting the Right Type of Omega- 3 Fats? How Much Fructose is Too Much? As a general recommendation, I suggest keeping your total fructose consumption below 2. The table at the bottom of this page can help you calculate your fructose from fruit consumption. However, if you have ANY of the following health issues, then you'll want to be very careful to limit fructose to just 1. Ideally, you'll want to avoid ALL sources of fructose until your insulin stabilizes, and then proceed with caution. Insulin resistance Diabetes. High blood pressure. High cholesterol. High uric acid. Obesity High uric acid, in particular, is a potent marker for fructose toxicity, so if your levels are above: 4 mg/dl for men 3.
